I got this question from Nuishiadeh Rose. Thought I’ll answer openly for someone else to benefit too. Y’all are welcome to contribute your advice/opinions as well.
Actually, there’s no one person in the history of dreamers who knew exactly how to achieve their dreams from the get go. No one knows 100% what they’re doing in the beginning but the dots always connect in the end. I am still figuring things out myself but nevertheless I’ve put myself out there. So, my advice is to start where you are with what you have. Don’t wait for the perfect time, the time will never be perfect. Don’t wait for others to validate your dream or buy into your dream, they may never do. You need to become your own source of inspiration and generate motivation and happiness that comes from within you.
“If I had to understand everything about connecting people before I began, I never would have started Facebook,” says Mark Zuckerberg “Ideas don’t come out fully formed, they only become better as you work on them” What we know today as Facebook did not start as Facebook. The initial idea was to serve a group of students but today it’s serving the whole world.
To dream is to have faith, to achieve the dream is to exercise that faith. Now, what is faith? In biblical terms “faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not yet seen” In ordinary language faith is simply the believe that it will work out….without this belief, it might be impossible to take any action towards achieving your dream.
The only people who know exactly how to achieve their dreams from the get go are employees. The plan is simple and its globally acceptable and applicable. “Go to school, get good grades and get a job”. Now, if your dream does not involve getting a job, then you’re pretty much on your own. You’ll have to figure things out by trying and errors. You’ll have to be willing to fail your way forward. You have to be willing to be misunderstood, misquoted, misjudge and even mocked. Anyone working on a big vision will get called crazy and all sorts of demeaning names. The world is harsh towards those who don’t follow the “system” but only those who break out of the systems do make history in the end.
Remember, the cost of not following your dreams is spending the rest of your life wishing you had. To achieve your dreams, you need to be brave enough to speak it. One reason many dreams never go anywhere is because the dreamer keeps it all to himself/herself. Dare to tell others about your dream and till will thrust you into action quicker as your reputation is on the line.
In a more practical way, If the dream is to go into sales or some sort of business, then start selling something even if it’s on street corners. If the dream is music or some sort of art – just sing, write songs, make art, practice, seek and attend auditions. If the dream is to be writer like myself, identify your genre and start writing – write from the heart and don’t worry about perfection. Your audience will connect with you and will love you for your authenticity. You’ll get better with time.
“There will be obstacles. There will be doubters. There will be mistakes. But with hard work, there are no limits.” ~Michael Phelps
Keep in mind you need courage more than you need money. Overcoming fear will be your greatest victory. Fear of “what if” and fear of what will people say. If you are really serious about achieving that dream, you’ll have to look fear eye ball to eye ball and do it anyway. Overcome fear with faith, and with courage pursue the journey. They are no mistakes, only lessons and there’s no price tag on the experience you gain along the way as you keep trying.
